Orion Pharma wins Chemical Industry Federation of Finland’s Innovation Award for drug to treat prostate cancer
The winner of the Chemical Industry Federation of Finland’s Innovation Prize for 2020 is Orion Pharma, for its drug to treat castration-resistant prostate cancer. The prize was awarded at the Chemical Industry Federation of Finland’s Science Forum in Helsinki on 6 October 2020.
The Chemical Industry Federation of Finland rewards companies and professionals in the chemical industry with its Innovation Award, which is granted every second year and has a total value of EUR 20,000. The purpose of the award is to encourage the research and product development teams of companies, universities and research institutes to develop new chemical products and services. We look for big and small innovations that improve the wellbeing of people and the environment in everyday life as well as in industrial production processes.
The innovation for which the prize was awarded this year is Orion Pharma’s drug for the treatment of non-metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer. Darolutamide, a molecule with a new structure developed by in co-operation Orion Pharma and Bayer, is a response to the need to find new ways to treat prostate cancer. Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer among men worldwide.
”The level of innovation in the Chemical Industry Federation of Finland’s annual competition was high again this year. The winners are united by the opportunity and willingness to deal with major global challenges, such as Orion Pharma’s winning innovation for prostate cancer treatment, says Petri Lehmus, director of research and development at Neste Corporation and chair of the innovation committee of the Chemical Industry Federation of Finland.
“Once again, there were plenty of excellent innovations among the entries. The innovation committee had the challenging task of selecting the finalists and choosing the winner”, says Mika Aalto, CEO of the Chemical Industry Federation of Finland.
Three honourable mentions were given to the following recipients:
The biotechnology unit of the department of biochemistry of the University of Turku, for the NANOLEC working group’s method for early detection of cancer.
Kemira, for its effective and safe disinfectant performic acid for water purification applications.
Keko Geopolymeerit, for its method for using mineral wool waste as a raw material for geopolymers.

The chemical industry is one of the most important industrial sectors in Finland. It accounts for approximately one-fifth of the country’s industrial production and exports of goods. We employ almost 100,000 people directly, indirectly and through the income created by the industry.
The industries that are considered part of the chemical industry in Finland are the chemical process industry and the manufacturers of oil products and other chemical products such as pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, detergents, paints, plastics and rubber products.
The Chemical Industry Federation of Finland is a trade association for the chemical industry and its affiliate industries. The goal of the association is to actively promote the competitiveness and operational preconditions of its members in Finland. The Chemical Industry Federation of Finland has almost 400 member companies and 13 member and cooperation associations.
