St1 Biofuels: Fuel out of dough leftovers

Fuel taxation in Finland directs choices and consumption more and more towards solutions that save energy and cut down carbon dioxide emissions. This quickly increases the need for biofuels.

St1 began the production of bioetanol out food industry leftovers and secondary flows in 2007. Now it is used in St1’s E10 and E5 petrol.

− Bioetanol for traffic use is made out fermentable waste and leftovers, such as household biowaste, bakery dough leftovers, old bread from shops, and other biowaste, says Patrick Pitkänen from St1 Biofuels Oy.

The lifecycle emissions of bioetanol made out of waste raw material are non-existent. When bioetanol is combusted in the engine, the carbon dioxide in the raw material is returned back to natural cycle. The use of fossil fuels, such as petrol, diesel or natural gas, increases carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere.
