Fibre material used as the transporter of catalysts
The first winner of the Chemical Industry Innovation Award was Smoptech Oy in 1997. The high-tech company operating in Turku started to priduce and commercialise the modification of fibre materials based on electron emission technology developed at Åbo Akademi. The development work quickly resulted in a new type of fibre material, whose properties can be utilised as carriers of catalysts and as an ion exchange fibre.
The fibre catalysts can be utilised in, for example, the pharmaceuticals, foodstuffs and chemical industries. Ion exchange, on the other hand, is used for the purification of air and water and for the chromatographic separation of materials, among others.
